Bawinanga Aboriginal Corporation (BAC) is a progressive Aboriginal corporation based in Maningrida that employs over 200 people. We represent and assist over 4000 Aboriginal people in the 32 homelands surrounding Maningrida in West Arnhem Land. Our work is carried out in the context of people’s traditional lands, cultural practices, and languages. Our services include new building and maintenance, road maintenance, arts, community development programs, collection of wild foods, and many more.

Job Description

The Money Management Service is managed by the Money Management Service manager under the direction of the Manger of Community Services in accordance with Bawinanga Aboriginal Corporation (BAC) corporate plans, policies, relevant legislation and funding requirements.

  • The core of the financial counselling concerns the undertaking of financial analysis, generation of options and advice about debt issues and support the client in negotiating with creditors or advocating on their behalf. The Financial Counsellor works with individuals, families or groups of consumers who are experiencing disadvantage and/or dispute in regard to their financial situations. They provide paralegal information and advocacy on an extensive range of issues related to the inability to pay household bills, loans, credit cards, mortgages, rent, fines, taxation and child support for example.

Desired Skills and Experience

SELECTION CRITERIA:

Essential:

  1. Diploma of Financial Counselling or above qualifications and 2 years experience.
  2. Ability to work as part of a team in a cross-cultural environment, fostering open communication and continuous quality improvement with a positive and innovative approach to problem solving.
  3. Possess an excellent consultative approach to management with sound experience in planning and well developed organisational skills.
  4. Proven ability to apply a high standard of oral and written communication skills.
  5. Demonstrated experience in the delivery of Government Programmes reporting and service operations.
  6. Demonstrated high level of competency in the use of computer networks, Microsoft Office Software (in particular Excel & Word).
  7. Experience in establishing and maintaining successful relationships with key stakeholders.
  8. Demonstrated interpersonal, written and oral communication skills to communicate effectively and produce confidential written reports of quality and relevance.
  9. Highly developed leadership skills and communication skills and the ability to implement these in the remote indigenous community context.
  10. Current Driver Licence and willingness to travel to Homelands.
  11. Demonstrated experience working in a remote aboriginal community environment, with knowledge and understanding of aboriginal protocol and culture.

Desirable:

  1. Experience working for a community development or not-for-profit organization
  2. Experience in and understanding of the use of computer-base financial management systems and government databases.
  3. Experience in the safe operation of 4WD in off road conditions.

  • Base Salary: $117,374.40 per annum
  • Plus 12% superannuation
